BOOK REVIEW

This edition has the same general overview as the second edition, containing the same seven chapters. Chapters 1 and 2 have only minor modifications. Chapters 3 through 6 are of the same general outline but are updated and in more detail. Chapter 7 has been completely rewritten. Chapters 3 through 7 have contributing authors who are in part responsible for some of the changes along with advances in the knowledge of molecular biology. The textbook is a general pathology text relating to the cellular response to blood flow disturbances, inflammation, repair, immunopathology, cell growth disorders, and causes of disease. Although the book emphasized the cellular aspect, it does not forget that general pathology includes basic pathologic definitions and descriptions of lesions of disease.

To fully understand the book, a good background of cellular biology and biochemistry is necessary. For individuals not well versed in these areas, the use of abbreviations of chemical and cellular components can become bothersome. Chapters 3 and 4 are quite detailed. It may be necessary to read the entire chapter to get an overview and then review it to understand the detailed message of the chapter. The book contains many illustrations that greatly help understand these more difficult sections. At the end of the chapters is a bibliography of suggested readings for those individuals who want more detailed explanations of the subject.

The authors intend the book to prepare veterinary students to understand clinical disease and treatment. It is also intended for residents and graduate students or those preparing for national board examinations. It has met these goals. In addition, it is an excellent update text for the seasoned pathologist who has developed a more narrow perspective of veterinary pathology.
