Book Review

Omaye, S. T. Food and Nutritional Toxicology, 1st ed. 319 pp. CRC Press, Boca Raton, FL, 2004. $99.95. ISBN 1-58716-071-4.

This is a good general text for any advanced undergraduate and graduate toxicology student and a good basic reference text for any veterinary pathology resident graduate student seeking basic information not only about food and nutritional toxicology but about toxicology in general. There are good, basic explanations of basic toxicologic principles that are well integrated into the overall theme of the book. The book also covers nutrient toxicity, something that most books in this area do not discuss. The information presented is accurate, and the references are appropriate and timely. The book is quite readable and easy to navigate. There are some notable omissions from the index, however, which might make using the index challenging for a novice in the field trying to locate specific information. Because of its breadth, which is extensive, the book in some respects lacks depth, particularly in describing the pathologic aspects of food and nutrient toxicity. Few gross and even fewer microscopic lesions are discussed under any of the topics. As such, this limits the usefulness of the book for veterinary pathologists. Nevertheless, it is an excellent introductory text and basic reference source for anyone interested in this rapidly developing field. For more detailed information related to pathologic issues, the pathologist will have to go elsewhere, however.
