Book Review

Heath J. P., editor. Dictionary of Microscopy, 358 pp. John Wiley and Sons, Ltd, West Sussex, UK, 2005. $49.95. ISBN 0-470-01199-8.

This first-edition dictionary gives concise descriptive definitions of more than 2,500 microscopy terms, listed alphabetically, along with plentiful color illustrations and diagrams. The entries are hierarchical so that most terms that are within longer definitions are themselves also defined elsewhere, and synonyms, when present, are listed with each definition. The intended audience includes students new to the field of microscopy, scientists seeking an explanation of an unfamiliar microscopical term or technique, and experienced microscopists looking for a quick reference or memory aid. Recently there has been an enormous progression and evolution of the application of microscopy in all areas of science, and this book would be of interest to most veterinary pathologists, especially those wishing to understand classical terms as well as stay abreast of the new ones. The book is not necessarily one that most pathologists would want to sit down and read cover to cover, but it can serve as a quick and handy bookshelf reference. Almost every page has illustrations and/or diagrams, all of which are of high quality. A valuable list of more than 300 microscopy-related acronyms that are difficult to look up when the acronym is unfamiliar is also included. The editor has done a good job of being selective of the listed entities so that this dictionary is not unwieldy, and the clear and concise definitions can nicely serve as starting points of comprehension so that more detailed explanations can be found in publications, technical documents, and the Internet.
